Gary Sherman Joins Shapiro, Blasi, Wasserman & Hermann

Shapiro, Blasi, Wasserman & Hermann announced that Gary Sherman has joined the firm as Of Counsel. Sherman focuses his practice on personal injury, negligence, insurance bad faith litigation, whistleblower cases, and commercial litigation.

A highly experienced attorney, Sherman comes with a long list of successful outcomes for clients, including one of the largest motor vehicle accident verdicts ($29.2 million) in Palm Beach County history. The verdict led to an insurance bad faith case which was litigated in the 15th Judicial Circuit in Palm Beach County, the 4th District Court of Appeal and the Florida Supreme Court as a matter of great public importance. Sherman ultimately achieved a favorable landmark decision which set forth the definitive procedure for insurance companies to follow in cases involving multiple claimants and insufficient coverage. Sherman also filed suit on behalf of a whistleblower in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida under the qui tam provisions of the Federal False Claims Act. Years after Sherman filed suit, the United States Department of Justice joined him and together they obtained what became the largest False Claims Act recovery ($22.5 million) in favor of the United States from a single hospital arising out of alleged violations of the Stark Statute.

Sherman has also devoted years of public service as a committee member and hearing officer for the Consumer Protection Board of Broward County, as a member and Chair of a Florida Bar Grievance committee, and as a Broward County Traffic Hearing Officer. During his tenure with those three organizations, he adjudicated countless consumer complaints, Florida Bar grievances and Broward County traffic citations.

He is admitted to The Florida Bar, the United States Supreme Court, The United States Circuit Court for the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida. Sherman received a Master of Laws in Trial Advocacy from Temple University and earned his juris doctor from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law.

Sherman is rated AV-Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethical standards.

ADA Public Access Claims and Compliance: Shareholder Adam S. Chotiner oversees the firm’s ADA Public Access Claims and Compliance practice group.

This group’s practice is focused on litigation and compliance under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (the “ADA”). Over the past 20+ years, there has been an explosion in the number of ADA Title III lawsuits being filed, particularly in Florida. Such ADA lawsuits often allege the existence of “physical barriers,” such as inaccessible restrooms or parking lots. Over the past few years the scope of ADA lawsuits has expanded to allegations that a business’ website is inaccessible to visually-impaired individuals or is otherwise non-compliant.
